A Legacy That Lives On. Honouring Historic Roots, Embracing New Beginnings at The Grafton Village Inn.
Nestled in the heart of Grafton, Ontario, the Grafton Village Inn is a charming piece of the village’s rich history. Originally built in 1832 to replace a log structure, the building was first known as Grover’s Tavern, after its founder, John Grover. The village itself was named after the tavern and in 1832, when Grover sold the tavern to Edward Pepper, it became known as Pepper’s Tavern. It was here that the name "Grafton" was officially adopted, in honour of Grover's hometown of Grafton, Massachusetts.
Over the years, the building changed hands several times, evolving from Pepper’s Tavern to The Mansion House Hotel and finally, to the Grafton Village Inn. The inn became a welcoming stop for travellers heading toward the bustling Grafton harbour or coming from Kingston, York (now Toronto) and the surrounding areas. In the early 1990s, the building was carefully restored to reflect its historical charm, capturing the essence of early 19th-century hospitality.
The Grafton Village Inn is more than just a landmark; it is a cornerstone of the village's heritage. The village of Grafton itself, originally called Grover's Tavern, was also known briefly as Haldimand, named after the township it is located in. This village and its inn have witnessed significant moments in history, including the late Robert ‘Bob’ Homme, best known as The Friendly Giant. A beloved television personality, Homme made his home in Grafton for many years, where he would frequently play his clarinet at the inn. In 1998, he was awarded the Order of Canada in a rare exception to protocol, with the ceremony taking place at the Grafton Village Inn. His memory, along with the history of the inn, continues to be an important part of Grafton’s identity.
The Grafton Village Inn is currently undergoing renovations and is preparing to begin a new chapter. Details are still taking shape, but we look forward to sharing this exciting transformation with you as soon as we can!. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to honour the rich history of this beloved landmark while ushering in a new era for the village and the inn.
